Based on a novel by Iwai Shimako, Jiyuu Renai (a.k.a. Bluestockings) is the story of a love triangle between a man and two beautiful women. Masato Harada (Kamikaze Taxi, Bounce Ko Gals) directed the film, which is set during the days of Japan’s male-dominated Taisho Era (1912-1926), when it was difficult for women to have both love and a career. Yuichiro (Toyokawa Etsushi of Angel Dust and Undo) is the son of a wealthy merchant family, who’s happily married to Akiko (Hasegawa Kyoko of Three…Extremes). When Akiko’s friend Kiyoko (Kimura Yoshino of Ichigo no Kakera) gets divorced, Akiko decides to help her find a job in Yuichiro’s company. Akiko even lends Kiyoko her kimono for the interview. But upon seeing Kiyoko, Yuichiro is immediately smitten…

Makiko Uchida arrives in a southern Japanese port hoping to find a boat that will take her to the final resting place of the Battleship Yamato on the 60th anniversary of its sinking. She is rebuffed by all until she reveals to Katsumi Kamio that she is the daughter of Petty Officer Uchida. Kamio is surprised for he thought unlike himself, Uchida had been lost when the Yamato was besieged and sunk on April 7, 1945 by American aircraft which prevented its fulfilling a final suicide mission against the American fleet battling to capture Okinawa. Kamio and Uchida were part of a close set of comrades that proudly and bravely served on board this, the largest battleship ever constructed. He agrees to journey with Makiko with only the help of Atsushi, a 15 year old deckhand. As he pilots the way throughout the rough 15 hour journey Kamio reminiscences about life aboard the Yamato during the war and also about the sailor’s mothers and girlfriends left back home.

Written and directed by Mitani Koki (Welcome Back Mr. McDonald, Our House, University Of Laughs), this film is a rollercoaster farcical comedy, set in a grand, five star hotel on New Year’s Eve. A collection of assorted characters check in over the course of the evening, crossing paths and ensuring chaos ensues, but all is resolved by the explosively frantic conclusion.

It is the end of the year and deputy hotel manager Shindo (Yakusho Koji - Shall We Dance?, Lorelei) has a deer research association’s Man Of The Year dinner to organize, a press conference with a prominent politician taking place, not to mention the New Year countdown party. Add these to all the ordinary little emergencies that take place on a daily basis in a hotel of this size and tonight is going to be a busy one. Coping with misspelt banners, missing ducks and a call girl who seems adamant to get past security is one thing, but when his head bell hop says he wants to quit, a housemaid is mistaken for a rich guest’s mistress and is whisked off to a secret rendezvous, the night is guaranteed to be a memorable one. And that’s before even considering the guests!

Co-starring Toda Keiko (Quill), Shinahara Ryoko (Kamikaze Girls), Katori Shingo, Matsu Takako (The Hidden Blade), and Sato Koichi (Aegis) - to name but a few - The Uchouten Hotel is a riotous mix of comedy and drama, filled with oddball characters and implausible situations that make for a thoroughly entertaining stay.
