Temptation of Wolves (aka Romance of Their Own, True Romance) (English Subtitle)

Romance of Their Own (aka: True Romance / Temptation of Wolves)

Films produced from ‘Internet published novels’ have become a trend in Korea.

Temptation of Wolves Korean Movies PosterTwo Internet novel adapted films, He Was Cool - The Guy was Cool (Geunomeun Meoshit seot da) and Romance on their own - Temptation of Wolves (Nukdae eui Yoohok) were released almost at the same time this summer. Both films’ original stories were written by the same person: the popular on-line storywriter, Lee Yun-se (better known by her penname, Guiyeoni). Her new on-line serial story ‘To My Boyfriend’ has also been picked up for adaptation and other on-line stories such as ‘Baekjowa Baeksu’, ‘Samsusaeng Sarang Iyagi’, ‘Oktapbang Goyangyi’ (Cat in the Rooftop Room), ‘Keanu Reeves Kkosigi’, ‘Saekma Jeonseol’, ‘Naesarang Iljinnyo’, ‘Mihonmo Iyagi’, ‘Naneun Aknyoilsubakae upda’, are in development or pre-production stages to be produced as films.

The first popular on-line novel turned into a film was Toemarok (aka Soul Guardians)(1998); then the subsequent on-line novel adapted films such as My Sassy Girl (2001) and My Tutor Friend (2003) gained huge successes in theaters, prompting production companies and investors to regard on-line stories as a ‘golden goose’.

“Temptation of Wolves,” directed by Kim Tae-gyun, considering its cheesy plot and poor moviemaking quality. But this doesn’t really matter to the target audience - girls in their teens and 20s (perhaps 30s). The most important selling point of this movie is that two cute guys play the main title roles. Whenever they pose for a nice shot or shed tears, ohhhs and ahhhs broke out of the mostly female audience at a preview earlier this week.

The film opens with a fight scene of high school students with cries of wolves echoing in the background.

Han-gyeong (Lee Cheong-ah), a plain-looking girl from the country who has transferred to a high school in Seoul, happens to witness the fistfight. Before she realizes what’s happening, two handsome boys fall in love with her.

Why? That’s a very good question. But the answer is nowhere to be found, at least in this movie. Although Han-gyeong is far from beautiful or cute, the two boys just chase her throughout the first half of the film. Ban Hae-won (Cho Han-sun) is a good-looking high school student. He fights well, rides a motorcycle and drives a luxury car, though he lacks a license. So popular is Hae-won that whenever he hops on a bus, girls quickly snap photos of him with their digital camera Phones.

Chung Tae-sung (Kang Dong-won) is kind-hearted and has a killer smile. He is very protective of Han-gyeong, calling her “sister.” His mood swings every five minutes, suggesting that there’s something wrong in his relationships with Han-gyeong.

The film focuses on the rivalry between Hae-won and Tae-sung for Han-gyeong’s heart. With pride and love at stake, they intensify their efforts to woo her, and she finds it extremely difficult to choose between them.

When the boys fight and run on the street, the film picks up some speed and momentum.

One day, Han-gyeong happens to realize that there is a reason behind Tae-sung’s affection. In short, they are not supposed to love each other because of a sad family history.

Han-kyung, a country bumpkin in every aspect, moves to Gangsin High school in Seoul to live with her mother. However her Seoul life is full of psychological and physical shocks. Someone throws his slipper at her head while riding the bus. But the problem does not end there. BAN Hea-won, the boy who threw the slipper, is no ordinary guy but the most popular hunk in the neighborhood. He takes fancy at Han-kyung¡?s bewildered but cute ways and pursues her aggressively. Even worse, JUNG Tae-seong, the shy but strong-fisted and strong-willed zzang(leader) of neighborhood Seonggwon High School has also taken a fancy to Hankyung. The two rivals in pride and love erupt into a desperate fight, and Han-kyung is touched and confused at the same time. However, Taeseong cannot love Hankyung due to an untold secret, but not knowing this, Hankyung agonizes over ways to not hurt them both. Taeseong finally leaves Hankyung and only then Heawon and Hankyung realize his secret. Their tragic but youthful story will bring tears to your eyes.
