Startling shifts between post-modern comedy and brutal violence mark tyro writer-helmer Park Chulhee’s “No Mercy for the Rude” as an ultra-hip variation on the ever-popular Korean hit man subgenre. Crackerjack pace, absurdist set pieces and an intriguing lead perf by Shin Hakyun as a mute killer-for-hire have helped boost pic to solid local returns since its Aug. 24 opening, and rousing response at the Vancouver festival points to promising offshore returns at fests and upscale markets on both sides of the Pacific. If ever there were a Korean import aimed at Stateside auds and ready for the Tarantino seal-of-approval, this is it.

An early sign of the film’s strategy of unsettling the viewer is how anti-hero Killa (Shin, looking super-cool) narrates his story, even though he has long refused to talk until he gets an operation to fix a severe speech impediment. To pay for the operation, Killa has opted to work as an assassin, but the knife-wielding killer will only do in obnoxious, nasty targets.

The film is about these three young people whose lives are thrown into uncertainty. Jung-hee, a 21 year-old college student is a lover of dance. She is confused when her father comes back after a fifteen-year absence and finds it difficult to accept him. 25 year-old Keun-woo is a telephone mechanic who enjoys eavesdropping while at work. He gets to know a woman through eavesdropping and falls in love with her. However, he is quite lost as to how he should express his feelings for her. Thirty-year-old In-ho was already a married man when he enlisted in the army two years previous. He comes home on his last leave of absence from the service. He detects something has changed in his wife but does not know what.

Youth is always the best and worst of times, disarmingly confusing yet beautifully meaningful. Kim Young Nam, assistant director on Hong Sang Soo’s Woman is the Future of Man, presents three stories about young adults reaching turnings point in their lives in his creative debut film, Don’t Look Back. Along with Kim himself, the acclaimed film features some of the best new faces in the business. Don’t Look Back won the NETPAC and FIPRESCI Awards at the 59th Locarno International Film Festival in August 2006.

In the first story, 21-year-old dancer Jung Hee (Kim Hye Na - Flower Island and Into The Mirror) finally reunites with her father after years of separation. She experiences a maelstrom of emotional conflicts ranging from affection to the temptation to reject him. The second story follows a 25-year-old telephone mechanic (Lee Sang Woo - Almost Love) who falls in love with a woman whose phone call he eavesdrops on. In the final story, a 30-year-old soldier (Kim Tae Woo - Woman is the Future of Man) comes home on leave and realizes how much his wife has changed since he left.

This film tells the story of Chinese Martial Arts Master Huo Yuanjia (1869-1910). Huo Yuanjia was the founder and spiritual guru of the Jin Wu Sports Federation.

The son of a great fighter who did not wish for his child to follow in his footsteps, the bullied Huo Yuanjia resolves to teach himself how to fight–and win. Years of training enable him to ace match after match in his home region of Tianjin. But as his fame as a martial arts master grows, so does his pride. After an ill-advised fight leads to another master’s death, members of Huo’s family are slain in revenge. Grieving and ashamed, Huo wanders the country in shock. Near death, he is rescued by women from an idyllic village, and is offered simple kindness and generosity that help him heal and regain his equilibrium over a period of several years. Huo realizes that the future of martial arts lies in sportsmanship and not brutality, and he rejoins society to apply what he has learned. Returning to Tianjin, Huo takes steps to come to terms with his past and restore his family’s name. Film director, Joong-rae, is preparing for his next movie but is unable to finish his script. So he pleads his friend, Chang-wook, a production designer, to go with him on a trip even though Chang-wook had already made plans with his girlfriend, Moon-sook, a composer. Eventually Chang-wook brings his girlfriend along and they all go on a trip to the west coast to visit Shinduri Beach Resort, which is covered with cherry blossoms and a flowing mist. There, Joong-rae makes advances on Chang-wook’s girlfriend, Moon-sook. Already a fan of his films, Moon-sook doesn’t hide her interest. So later, while avoiding Chang-wook’s eyes, the two spend a heated night together. But the next day Joong-rae’s face is filled with anxiety as he proposes to go back to Seoul. He and Moon-sook then part awkwardly.

Two days later, Joong-rae is back again in Shinduri. He tries to let Moon-sook know that he is back in Shinduri but he is unable to reach her and leaves the message. Then, he runs into a young woman named Sun-hee. Telling her that she resembles a woman that he’s thinking of as a character in the film, Joong-rae approaches Sun-hee for an interview. They, too, end up spending a night together. Moon-sook arrives at the scene with the intent to be with Joong-rae. But seeing him being with Sun-hee, Moon-sook goes to drink on her own out of anger…

Sung Hyun Ah (The Scarlet Letter, Cello) her lover has never taken a dangerous risk in her life. She has been for seven years and is going to get married next month. It might be a mistake to accept his proposal, but over the next day she will experience a level of excitement and intimacy, she has never experienced before, and this could change her life all of sudden.

The nature of liking someone vs. being truly committed in love with another person is explored in this film.

“Aein” in a way reminded me of “Great Expectations” with Ethan Hawke and Gwyneth Paltrow, where Paltrow’s character kept playing mind games with Hawke’s character’s emotions, making him think “Does she love me…does she not…why does she keep going back and forth and in-and-out of my life, playing mind games, toying with my emotions, and keep torchering my soul?”

The woman in this film does the same thing to the man who is infatuated with her. The man genuinely wants to love the woman, but every time he attempts to get emotionally closer to her and get more comfortable with her, she puts up a wall, and keeps withdrawing from him. Plus, she keeps playing mind games with him. As for the moments of romantic interlude, the sex scenes are great, and have the right level of erotic charge to keep its viewers interested, as the viewers keep wondering what will ultimately happen between these 2 people.

This is not your typical love story, and for those of you who have had your hearts broken, stepped on, and trampled upon, this film will resonate with you and generate a feeling of empathy.

But, the bottomline is that this film definitely answers that eternal question of whether or not Korean women (in general) tend to marry men for money/security over that of true love.

Sam Lee, known more for comedic characters in recent years, takes up the challenging role of Wai, a cop with an extreme personality. His anger explodes when Pang Jr. kills his colleagues one by one, and he becomes as inhumane as his opponent. Sichuanese actress Pei Wei Ying, best known for appearing in a cell phone commercial opposite Jay Chou a few years ago, plays the assassin’s newfound girlfriend. Her appearance signifies the only humanity that remains in the merciless hitman. Veteran television actor Lam Ka Wah returns as the cop’s father, and Eddie Cheung and Lam Suet from Election round out the cast as police officers.

Based on a novel by Iwai Shimako, Jiyuu Renai (a.k.a. Bluestockings) is the story of a love triangle between a man and two beautiful women.
