ReCycle (Re-Cycle) (Siu-Ming Lau) (chinese movie - english subtitle)

ReCycle (Re-Cycle) (Siu-Ming Lau) (chinese movie - english subtitle) Poster

The Pang brothers return with another horror movie Re-Cycle which closed Cannes Film Festival’s “Un Certain Regard” section. This visually impressive piece stars Angelica Lee who first worked with the Pang brothers in The Eye. She plays a popular author who falls into a eerily beautiful world when writing a supernatural thriller. The Pang brothers employ new CG technologies to create abandoned slums which resemble Hong Kong’s long-forgotten demolished walled city, imagined color-drained hills and forests, and a suffocating tunnel with embryos hanging from above. The first half of the film delivers plenty of suspense in the same style as other Pang brothers’ film. However, the second half of Re-Cycle, mostly an RPG-like adventure, innovatively weaves into the exquisite setting a sense of spookiness.

Re-cycle (Special Edition) 2 disc/gift setAngelica Lee is Ting-yin, a popular author who is stuck with her writing and keeps discarding her ideas. She starts to sense her apartment being haunted. When she steps out of her building, she arrives in a mysterious world where she comes across characters she has created and abandoned. An old man (Lau Siu Ming) tells her that she must go to “The Transit” to leave this place, and a little girl (Tsang Nga Kei) accompanies her to go through one desolate world to another in this inexplicable space… The film concludes with a surprising twist which one will appreciate if he or she follows the clever plot closely.

The sophisticated narrative structure, which at times mixes fiction and reality, makes the film more interesting than what is expected from a normal horror film. Thematically speaking, the attraction of Re-Cycle lies in the notion of abandonment. Ideas discarded and memories forgotten, no matter by an individual or a community, will return to haunt you.

A Bloody Aria (english subtitles)

A Bloody Aria 2006 korean movies poster

Picture this situation: a professor, his attractive young student, and a white Mercedes. He simply wanted a nice weekend drive in the countryside with his favorite student - but he quickly discovers that sometimes people can be scarier than ghosts. What seemed like his own One Fine Spring Day turns into a Korean-style Deliverance, complete with angry, crazy country bumpkins. And then it just becomes a miserable day for everyone involved.

Extremely violent, sadistically comic and just oozing creativity from every corner, Won Shin Yeon’s second film A Bloody Aria continues one of the most important trends in recent Korean Cinema, that of mixing elements from different genres and adding a little (wicked) humour on the side. Whereas his debut The Wig was a producer-driven horror film heavy on the visuals, A Bloody Aria is pure, unadulterated raw energy. Its script created huge buzz in the industry, when it won an important contest in 2004. And with a cast like that, it’s no surprise the performances carry the film: Han Suk Kyu plays a villain for the first time in his career, and eternal second-liners Oh Dal Soo (Oldboy, Sympathy For Lady Vengeance) and Lee Moon Shik (A Big Match, Mapado) get the chance to show their considerable talent. A Bloody Aria is certainly not for the weak of heart, but it’s probably one of Korea’s most unique black comedies since The Humanist.

Apartment (english subtitles)

Apartment korean movies poster
Comfortable, familiar, sophisticated. Just like millions of other Koreans, Se Jin (Ko So Young) lives in an apartment complex, but she’s forced by loneliness to spend endless nights staring out the window. That’s when she discovers something peculiar: the apartment complex next door turns off the lights every evening at 9:56 PM. It never skips a day, like a perfect Swiss clock. Even more shocking, it turns out that everyday a new life is consumed, a new murder committed in that strange apartment next door.

Traditional horror is a dying genre in Korean Cinema, with more and more first time directors testing the industry’s waters through stylish quasi-horror films, which represent little more than a quick proving ground for future, more ambitious projects. But there’s someone who respects tradition, and continues to shoot good old horror films: Ahn Byung Ki. The man behind Nightmare, Phone, and Bunshinsaba has returned after a long hiatus with his latest entry in the horror field, this time casting a superstar in the leading role. Ko So Young’s last film was the 2003 political thriller Double Agent with Han Suk Kyu. This is her first time starring in a horror film, after spending most of her career between popular TV dramas and big screen melodramas. After its successful threatrical run in Korea, Apartment arrives on DVD to thrill international audiences. Just remember to keep your lights on, at least until 9:56 PM!

Sometimes it just isn’t your day. All corrupt homicide detective Sung Woo (Park Joong Hoon of Two Cops and Nowhere To Hide) wanted was another night collecting easy money at a room salon, but first his partner is killed, and then he ends up becoming the most unlikely of hostages. Su Hyeon (Chun Jeong Myung) doesn’t have it much better. After getting out of his gang, he tries to lead a decent life, but gets falsely accused of murder and lands in prison. When Su Hyeon breaks out of jail, his hostage ends up being none other than Sung Woo. Although they start out as antagonists, the two end up building a strange partnership.

Director Jo Min Ho has been working in the industry since the early 90s, when he was assistant director for troubled productions like No Emergency Exit and small classics like A Hot Roof. It took him almost a decade to debut with a feature film, the 2002 gangster comedy Jungle Juice starring Lee Bum Soo and Jang Hyuk. His new film, Les Formidables, takes some of the elements at work on his previous films, along with the rivals-become-partners sensibility which made Two Cops a smash hit in the early 90s. Jo recruited the talents of top star Park Joong Hoon and Chun Jeong Myung of Fashion Seventies and the fantastic Goodbye Solo, one of the industry’s most promising young faces.

Arang (english subtitles)

Arang Korean Movies Poster

Korea’s latest horror film Arang is loosely based on Arang Tale, a famous folk tale in which the ghost of a minister’s daughter solicits a governor to help her settle her grudge. Ahn Sang Hoon, assistant director of …ing and director of the 2004 short “Pass Over”, has been busily preparing Arang (previously titled Line), his feature debut, for the last few years. His efforts have produced an eerie, interesting film that transcends the typical summer horror flick by focusing on characters and personal horrors rather than predictable thrill elements.

Arang starts out with the usual duo of detectives. Song Yoon Ah (Hotelier and Lost in Love) is So Young, a seasoned veteran who just returned from suspension, while rookie Hyun Gi is played by My Girl’s Lee Dong Wook in his film debut. Investigating a serial killer case, the two find clues leading them to a young girl violently murdered in a rural village ten years earlier. Plagued by external and internal ghosts, the detectives must unravel the disturbing mystery.
