Golmaal

http://images.smashits.com/reviews/bigimages/022golmaal.jpgWhen your objective is clear from the onset, and when you don’t veer from that objective (save on a limited 2-3 occasions) the results are usually quite successful and the same holds true for Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal. His objective is to make people laugh, to entertain, and overall to create an enjoyable experience; his objective is not to create landmark cinema or an award winning affair; he does not try to create a typical “masala affair by incorporating a little bit of everything and leaving the audience with nothing; he wants to make you laugh, and that he does quite successfully.

The film really does not have a strong screenplay or story to boost of; however what it does have are very well etched characters who move from one hilarious scene to another, scenes which are often not even linked or required, but scenes which are absolutely rib-tickling. The story of the film can be summed up in a sentence or two, but as mentioned earlier, here the intention is just to make the viewer laugh; sometimes through witty one liners, sometimes through smart aleck under the breathe retorts and sometimes just though plain, slapstick comedy, without resorting to an inkling of vulgarity. This film is a case in point that even though a comedy does not require a strong story line, if the characters are well defined and the scenes well written, and if the actors bring life to the characters and deliver the lines with the required timing and chemistry which is the basic requirement of a comedy, the film can work as is proven by Golmaal.

http://media.santabanta.com/newsite/cinemascope/bitimages/golmaal.jpg Golmaal is about 4 friends who have nothing better to do in life other then con people in order to ensure that they have enough money in their pockets to enjoy life on a day to day basis. When they get kicked out of Laxman (Sharma Joshi’s) hostel the foursome of Gopal (Ajay Devagan) the gang leader much to the dismay of the others, Madhav (Arshad Warsi in a superb performance), Laxman, the relatively more well behaved and highly ethical of the lot and Lucky (Tushar Kapoor) the one who can not speak and yet has some of the best lines, in the process of evading a money lender, they land up at the bungalow of a blind elderly couple (Paresh Rawal and Sushmita Mukherjee) and pose as their only grandson from America. However, their well planned execution goes astray and instead of 1 of them being the grandson while the remaining 3 are to be silent occupants, the grandson Sameer enters as a combination of Laxman and Gopal, wherein Laxman is the body and Gopal is the voice.

There are numerous scenes which will not only have the viewer reeling with laughter, but scenes which will remain with them even after leaving the theatre. Madhav’s take on Rani Mukherji in Black is an absolute laugh riot and is one scene which the viewer will definitely remember. The black and white to colour song picturized mainly on Paresh Rawal and Sushmita Mukherjee, is enjoyable due to its treatment as well as the fact that it takes a dig at the films of yesteryears, otherwise the song actually acts as more of a hindrance.

Ajay Devgan seems out of place in an attempt to create a “cool-dude persona although he excels in his scenes with Arshad Warsi, where their timing and chemistry is clearly impeccable and they both play off each other very well. Ajay’s old man act in front of the dean is also a treat to watch and will for sure be remembered as one of the most memorable scenes of the film. However if there is any one actor who steals the show it is Arshad Warsi; his timing, facial expressions, reactions and dialogue delivery are perfect to the tee. Sharman Joshi as the “bechara of the group excels and his role as the voice of Lucky will evoke strong laughter from the audience. The surprise package of the lot is Tushar Kapoor, who technically has no dialogues in the film (since he is mute) and hence he uses his body language and expressions to make-up for the lack of dialogues and he truly does make up for it. Rimi Sen is apt for the role, but how one wishes she would have had a slightly more substantial role. Paresh Rawal and Sushmita Mukerjee are perfect for the role of the old couple and they truly make the black and white song enjoyable.

The only flaw in the film lies in the fact that a few scenes slip out of the comedy genre and create a serious atmosphere, which inevitable puts a speed breaker in the laugh riot and one can sense that the audiences are just waiting for those scenes to end. Also one can not help but feel a sense of dejavu in the climax as it seems to be too similar to the climax of Hulchul. In spite of these flaws, the film is a must see for all those who love comedies and want to see a film which will have them leave the theatre with just a smile on their face and not a single thought on their mind.

Sex is zero with (English Subtitle)

Sex is zero korean movies poster

Story: Eun Sik is 28 years old and has recently started school at the university. He is a member of the Cha Ryu group and practices with them daily, through painful endurance training. He meets the much younger and gorgeous Eun Hyo, for whom he holds a completely one-sided attraction. Eun Sik’s amazingly unlucky, and a host of embarrassing situations happen to him. Through all of this, him and his insanely horny group of friends help make one of the most memorable sex comedies, complete with both hilarious and somewhat dramatic moments.

Review: It’s really hard not to laugh at “Sex is Zero”. One of the main things this movie has going for it is the fact that it throws everything you can expect in a sex comedy at you at a fast pace, which of course includes: Boobs, masturbation, eating stuff you shouldn’t, getting caught masturbating, oral sex and masturbating with friends. While a few jokes in the film are hit or miss, the majority of the running time is immensely enjoyable.

The strength of this movie lies in it’s characters, but that’s also one of it’s weaknesses. What this means is that, while Eun Sik and his friends are hilarious and likable, it’s hard to get any feeling from some of the women, especially the lead girl, Eun Hyo. Throughout the film, it becomes increasingly hard to care about her, as she seemed virtually heartless through many moments. It could be said that this was the kind of character she was trying to portray, but it doesn’t come off like that. To be fair, she cleans her act up near the end of the film, forced as it may seem.

It’s hard not to feel bad for Eun Sik, but he’s so damn stupid sometimes you want to kill him. While the emotions and jokes he conveys are funny and believable, his would-be significant other never seems to reciprocate anything but loathing. Not to spoil anything, but the films finale is disappointing. Let’s just say it manages to end things the way every teen film does, dramatic interlude notwithstanding.

Yun Je Gyun doesn’t really direct this film with any special flair worth mentioning. At times it comes off as cold, as if it was just a job that needed to be done quickly and efficiently. While it is efficiently produced, and looks great, there doesn’t seem to be as much heart as there is in a film like My Sassy Girl, which manages to be funny and compassionate in regards to its characters and the viewer. While it’s not fair to compare the two, as they are completely different films at the opposite end of the spectrum, it’s just a matter of the feeling you get from the direction, as Korean films have seemed to be a very warm lot.

The choice of music in the film is very 80s, like a throwback to sex comedies before it. It’s just too bad they chose the eardrum tearing out “We got the beat” as the opening song and as one to include on the menu. A minor gripe that’s worthy of mention if not just to advise the viewer to lower the volume as you pop the disc in. There, KFCC just saved your ears from bleeding, so don’t say we never did anything for ya.

Overall the film mixes fairly well, with the proper doses of gorgeous Korean girls taking it off for you, scrawny effeminate guys shrieking and your daily overdose of internet porn masturbation. It’s just that the film falls flat in a few areas and has a hard time getting the kid across the street to help pick it up. The dramatic section is a bit odd, and the finale is a tad cliched, but watch this once or twice with a few friends and you’ll laugh your ass off.

Temptation of Wolves (aka Romance of Their Own, True Romance) (English Subtitle)

Romance of Their Own (aka: True Romance / Temptation of Wolves)

Films produced from ‘Internet published novels’ have become a trend in Korea.

Temptation of Wolves Korean Movies PosterTwo Internet novel adapted films, He Was Cool - The Guy was Cool (Geunomeun Meoshit seot da) and Romance on their own - Temptation of Wolves (Nukdae eui Yoohok) were released almost at the same time this summer. Both films’ original stories were written by the same person: the popular on-line storywriter, Lee Yun-se (better known by her penname, Guiyeoni). Her new on-line serial story ‘To My Boyfriend’ has also been picked up for adaptation and other on-line stories such as ‘Baekjowa Baeksu’, ‘Samsusaeng Sarang Iyagi’, ‘Oktapbang Goyangyi’ (Cat in the Rooftop Room), ‘Keanu Reeves Kkosigi’, ‘Saekma Jeonseol’, ‘Naesarang Iljinnyo’, ‘Mihonmo Iyagi’, ‘Naneun Aknyoilsubakae upda’, are in development or pre-production stages to be produced as films.

The first popular on-line novel turned into a film was Toemarok (aka Soul Guardians)(1998); then the subsequent on-line novel adapted films such as My Sassy Girl (2001) and My Tutor Friend (2003) gained huge successes in theaters, prompting production companies and investors to regard on-line stories as a ‘golden goose’.

“Temptation of Wolves,” directed by Kim Tae-gyun, considering its cheesy plot and poor moviemaking quality. But this doesn’t really matter to the target audience - girls in their teens and 20s (perhaps 30s). The most important selling point of this movie is that two cute guys play the main title roles. Whenever they pose for a nice shot or shed tears, ohhhs and ahhhs broke out of the mostly female audience at a preview earlier this week.

The film opens with a fight scene of high school students with cries of wolves echoing in the background.

Han-gyeong (Lee Cheong-ah), a plain-looking girl from the country who has transferred to a high school in Seoul, happens to witness the fistfight. Before she realizes what’s happening, two handsome boys fall in love with her.

Why? That’s a very good question. But the answer is nowhere to be found, at least in this movie. Although Han-gyeong is far from beautiful or cute, the two boys just chase her throughout the first half of the film. Ban Hae-won (Cho Han-sun) is a good-looking high school student. He fights well, rides a motorcycle and drives a luxury car, though he lacks a license. So popular is Hae-won that whenever he hops on a bus, girls quickly snap photos of him with their digital camera Phones.

Chung Tae-sung (Kang Dong-won) is kind-hearted and has a killer smile. He is very protective of Han-gyeong, calling her “sister.” His mood swings every five minutes, suggesting that there’s something wrong in his relationships with Han-gyeong.

The film focuses on the rivalry between Hae-won and Tae-sung for Han-gyeong’s heart. With pride and love at stake, they intensify their efforts to woo her, and she finds it extremely difficult to choose between them.

When the boys fight and run on the street, the film picks up some speed and momentum.

One day, Han-gyeong happens to realize that there is a reason behind Tae-sung’s affection. In short, they are not supposed to love each other because of a sad family history.

Han-kyung, a country bumpkin in every aspect, moves to Gangsin High school in Seoul to live with her mother. However her Seoul life is full of psychological and physical shocks. Someone throws his slipper at her head while riding the bus. But the problem does not end there. BAN Hea-won, the boy who threw the slipper, is no ordinary guy but the most popular hunk in the neighborhood. He takes fancy at Han-kyung¡?s bewildered but cute ways and pursues her aggressively. Even worse, JUNG Tae-seong, the shy but strong-fisted and strong-willed zzang(leader) of neighborhood Seonggwon High School has also taken a fancy to Hankyung. The two rivals in pride and love erupt into a desperate fight, and Han-kyung is touched and confused at the same time. However, Taeseong cannot love Hankyung due to an untold secret, but not knowing this, Hankyung agonizes over ways to not hurt them both. Taeseong finally leaves Hankyung and only then Heawon and Hankyung realize his secret. Their tragic but youthful story will bring tears to your eyes.

King And The Clown (English Subtitle)

the king and the clown korean movies poster

The surprise success story of 2005, King And The Clown shocked everyone by coming out of nowhere to become the highest grossing film of the year in Korea, and making a star of its androgynous-looking lead, Lee Jun Gi. A modestly produced feature, with a cast featuring no A-list performers, the film is set during the reign of infamous king Yeon-San. Two performing clowns (Lee and Gam Woo Sung from Spider Forest) produce a satirical play, which criticizes the country’s ruler. While this makes them highly popular amongst the common people, it gets them into a world of trouble with the authorities. The two performers are arrested and accused of treason, a crime that carries the death penalty. The clowns then make a deal with the King (Jeong Jin Young - Hi, Dharma) - if they can make him laugh with their play-acting, he will spare them. They are successful, and become the official entertainers of the royal court. Things become more complicated, however, as the king shows increasing affection towards one of the clowns and they realize that their lives may have begun down an irreversible path. A thrilling drama exploring secret desire in the top echelons of power, King And The Clown is a taboo-breaking cinematic treat that tackles subject matter so rarely seen in Korean Cinema, but that this one time, has now been seen by a quarter of Korea’s population!
